Our School
Welcome to Alexander Elementary
Alice Moore Alexander Elementary School has a long and proud history in Denton. Established in 1884, Alexander Elementary was originally named Robert E. Lee Elementary and was the first free public school in Denton, located between Hickory and Sycamore Streets. The school hired Clara Skiles, the area’s first female principal, in 1925 – which was considered a very progressive idea for the time.
The school was moved throughout the city over a course of more than a century, and it was re-constructed at its current location near Mack Park in 1988 as an open-concept school. In 2005, the 84,000-square-foot campus was completely renovated, and science classrooms were added in 2012.
In 2017, the school was renamed Alexander Elementary, honoring Alice Alexander – an educator who served the Denton community for over 40 years. Ms. Alexander taught kindergarten and first grade for four decades, spending much of her career at Fred Moore School, a school named for her father in 1949. Her lifelong commitment to children and families left a lasting impring on the community, and her legacy continues to guide the spirit of the school today. Alexander Elementary serves students in the Denton High attendance zone.
In December 2025, Alexander Elementary became the first Nationally Certified STEM School in Denton ISD, earning certification through the National Institute for STEM Education. This distinction recognizes the school's rigorous, high-level STEM instruction and commitment to innovation, problem-solving, and real-world learning experiences for all students.
Beyond academics, Alexander offers a vibrant selection of extracurricular opportunities that nurture creativity, leadership, and teamwork. Programs include our Ballet Folklorico dance team, a proud campus tradition for more than a decade; our GOAL soccer team; Teach Denton, a club for students interested in pursuing careers in education; and many more activities designed to help every student discover their passions.
Today, Alexander Elementary continues to honor its historic roots while preparing students for the future -- blending tradition, innovation, and community in everything we do.
